NATURAL RESOURCES
Mineral Resources
The
municipality is recorded to have deposit of gold, copper and chromite. However,
except for copper, there is no record of any gold or chromites exploration claim
with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources.
To date,
there are six lode claims of copper in Canibongan lodged with the DENR office.
The claim area is underline chiefly by volcanic flow composed mainly of basalt
interbedded conglomerates of fine elastic sediments. The Zamboanga formation
which consisted of shale, sandstones, conglomerate and limestone dated lower
ciocene unformably overlie the volcanics. Isolated exposure of ultramatic in
Barangay Saluyong and along Dohinob river are mostly serpentine and peredite.
Also,
isolated bodies of limestone of the sedimentary formation occur along hill tops
and ridge slopes within the claim area. Mineralization in Barangay Canibongan consist mainly of copper sulphide with massive replacement bodies in basaltic floor rock as well as veins and fracture fillings along favorable structural zone. Sulphide replacement generally occurs on the surface of the flows. Mineralization also occur disseminations and numerous chalcophyrite grains in silicified, altered portions of the basalt.
Ore minerals
consist of chacopyrite, chalcosite, sphalorite and sometimes galona with pyrite
occurring in significant quarts. Gangue minerals are mostly quarts, barite,
culcite, epidote, soricite, chlorite and clay minerals.
Trade and Industry
At present,
there are two hundred twenty commercial establishments operating in the
municipality. Aside from the market buildings in the poblacion, almost all
barangays have their own market building.
There is also
a Rural Bank operating in the municipality. This is the only banking institution
in the municipality. This bank offers agricultural, commercial and industrial
loans to their clientele.
The
municipality is within the Dipolog-Katipunan-Roxas-Manukan (DDKRM) corridor.
But industrial activities in the municipality are mainly involved in the
processing of agricultural products especially copras.
The POMS
Ventures Corporation, formerly the Southern Islands Oil Mill is the major oil
processing firms situated on an eleven (11) hectare lot. The copra is being
supplied from the municipality and its neighboring municipalities and provinces
and other cities like Tacloban, Cagayan De Oro, Davao and Baybay Leyte. The
copra is utilized and processed into oil and copra pellets.
There are
also stevedoring services in Nabilid to service the transport of cargoes
within the vicinity of the municipal wharf. An Agro-Industrial Center is present
in the municipality located in Irasan, Roxas, Zamboanga del Norte.
There are
also welding and vulcanizing shops, tailoring, bakeshops and other
establishments involved in the processing of other indigenous natural
resources.
TOURISM
The
Villaester Highland Spring Resort in Barangay Salisig is the only developed
area for tourism. Tulbong Falls in Barangay Canibongan, Crystal Cave in
Piñalan are among the other areas that need to be developed for possible
tourist attraction in the municipality.
INFRASTRUCTURE
The LGU’s various existing farm-to-market roads
are badly in need of repairs and Maintenance. The said roads are hardly
passable, especially during rainy season. On the other hand, some of the
existing heavy equipment are already dilapidated and are very old,
service-life-wise. Thus, it often bogs down during operations and would often
take weeks before it would ran again, delaying the lined-up projects. Also, the
LGU’s heavy equipment are not adequate to rehabilitate nor construct the various
existing and proposed farm to market roads of the municipality. With the present
administration’s thrust towards agriculture, the LGU has prioritized the
rehabilitation/construction of farm-to-market roads in order to help the farmers
in the transportation of their products and in turn, materialize the
administration’s goals. There is a need to mobilize resources for the
procurement of additional heavy equipment.

municipality are with developed spring. Deep well, shallow well and open spring
are among other source of water in all other barangays.
